Bay Ridge Penguin Regatta

(and Make-up for 2021 Potomac Penguin Fleet #1 Penso Frostbite Regatta)

After delaying a day because of a strong wind forecast, 4 Penguins appeared on Sunday, June 27th at the Bay Ridge Community Marina on Lake Ogleton in Annapolis for the first Bay Ridge Penguin Regatta.  The forecast winds for Sunday increased from the predicted 10 knots and we were treated to more like 12 with gusts in the 16-18 knot range which made for some quick races on the two lap windward leeward courses off of Bembe Beach near the entrance to Lake Ogleton that PRO Scott Allan set up.  John Majane, sailing solo, ventured onto the race course but decided discretion was the better part of valor and headed back for the relatively protected confines of Lake Ogleton.  The southeast breeze gave the sailors a relatively protected course, although the left side was definitely lumpier as the waves launched over Tolley Point rolled up the Severn River.  Bill Lawson and Colette Pries showed their time away from the Penguin hadn’t affected them much as they sailed to wins in the first two races.  Scotty Allan sailing with his daughter Brooke traded finish places with Charlie Krafft with crew LeAnn Myrhe.  In races 3 & 4 Krafft and Myrhe took the horn with Lawson and Pries followed by the Allans.  In race 5 Lawson suffered an equipment failure and retired.  Results are summarized below.

Special thanks to Scotty Allan for arranging this event and his dad, Scott Allan, for running the races for us.  It was great to get out in a good breeze and enjoy a beautiful summer day on the Chesapeake. (and it was windy enough that the powerboats weren’t an issue)
