PRO: Mark Hasslinger

The 2017 Penguin Internationals were hosted by Severn Sailing Association and sailed on the Severn River near Bembe Beach on August 17th and 18th.  8 competitors, hailing from Sterling, VA to Easton, MD and six points in between, competed. The winds were out of the southeast at 8-10 kts on Thursday, and the southwest to south at 5-12 kts.  on Friday.  PRO Mark Hasslinger and his team set up windward leeward courses with a  mid-beat start and finish line.  In the one-lap race one, Bill Lawson with Colette Preis were off to a quick start, banging the right side of the course and leading around the one-lap course.  Race 2 was lengthened to two laps, and Jonathan and Annie Bartlett showed what was to become a common sight and took line honors.  In race three, there was some confusion at the start with Bill Lawson being called over and Jonathan Bartlett restarting as well, although it wasn’t clear if he was over.  Charlie Krafft with Donna McKenzie and Chris Conway sailing with his daughter Campbell, took advantage of this and finished 1 -2.  Race 4 was conducted with an auspicious cloud in the western sky which was predicted to be accompanied by strong rain and thunderstorms, so the course was made 1 lap.  Scott Williamson, who was sailing with a complex matrix of crew consisting of various children and his wife called it a day after two races.  Amy Krafft, sailing with 80+ year old Thistle sailor Don Moore also headed in before the weather hit.  We had a refresher in code flag M, as the leeward mark went adrift in race 4.  Thursday night, Bartlett was in the lead with 7 points, with Lawson and Krafft at 10 each and Conway in 4th with 14.

Friday, the breeze was a bit lighter and more westerly than early predictions, however at the end of race two the wind shifted from southwest to south and kicked up from about 6-8 kts. to 10 – 14 kts.  Charlie Krafft found wind on the right side of the course and led around the two lap course in race 5, just holding off Bartlett who made a strong bid at the end.  Sandy McAllister, sailing with Will Donald took 3rd in race 5. Race 6 saw a couple of lead changes as the wind was still a bit fickle with better pressure on the right (west).  Bartlett prevailed by getting right first and Lawson took advantage of a left shift on the second beat to round the weather mark in lap 2 in 2nd and held his position to the finish.  In race 7, Chris Conway was battling for second when his mainsheet broke and he had to restring it, dropping him to 5th.  Race 8 was academic for Bartlett, but he sailed anyway and had another decisive victory.  Lawson took second and tied Charlie Krafft on points, but discarded a 5th versus a 3rd for Krafft to take second overall.  Chris Conway finished fourth, two points ahead of Sandy McAllister.  Amy Krafft was the top female skipper.  Hank Krafft, sailing solo, was the top Classic boat.  The Tennerstedt award went to Charlie Krafft.  The Lawson family trophy went to Jonathan and Annie Bartlett.
